What do the new smoke alarm laws require?
Queensland’s smoke alarm legislation applies to every home in the state, owner-occupied and rental, from 1 January 2027.
To comply, your smoke alarms must be:
- Photoelectric (AS 3786:2014), with no ionisation alarms
- Interconnected, so when one alarm sounds they all sound
- Hardwired, or powered by a 10-year non-removable battery
- Installed in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every level of the home
- Less than 10 years old
